Ban Fracking in NY State

The future of energy should maintain the productivity of the ecosystem. Hydrofracking does not do that. The shale gas industry in the United States is hiding the dangers of fracking. If we are to address the future of energy in NY state, we should maintain the ecosystem's ability to provide us with drinking water, agricultural land, and habitation.

Hydro fracking in Ohio has caused mini earthquakes. Water tunnels may be damaged if hydro fracking is permitted in NY State. Existing laws, the “Halliburton Clause”, prevents the public from knowing what goes into the hydrofracking fluid. Known ingredients can't be removed from water purification plants that serve NY State. I refuse to accept the potential dangers to NY State's drinking water.

In Tioga County, PA—28 heads of cattle were exposed to drilling wastewater. Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection quarantined the cattle out of concern for the harm they may bring to the food chain. After only a limited time, the cattle became sick and several gave birth to stillborn calves. The unknown proprietary ingredients of fracking fluid can't be examined because of the Halliburton clause. It puts the environment, agriculture, and people in danger of getting sick.

In Dimock, PA and Pavillion, WY-- the water has been found to be contaminated by fracking. In Dimock, the drinking may have to be trucked in. How would NY State handle contamination? Would it truck water to its citizens? The roads will take a beating and fuel costs will rise. And where would we get the water from if our aquifers are destroyed by fracking? How would NY State handle the cleanup of unknown, proprietary fracking ingredients protected by the Halliburton clause? There is no peer reviewed process because the ingredients remain secret.

The costs of water tunnel repair, contamination clean up, are not sensible to NY State residents. No amount of money can return an ecosystem's pristine state once it has been contaminated by industry. We see this in the Hudson River, despite a slight recovery, still contains PCB's dumped by General Electric. The cleanup costs may fall to the public, up to $400 million dollars. Outside NY State, there are numerous examples of industrial accidents that have destroyed the environment and livelihoods. Let's take the long view and ban fracking in NY State. Let's protect its environment, agriculture, and its residents.

Watched this on the Netflix DVD last night, it's a great documentary to encourage dissent. Being patriotic doesn't necessarily mean wrapping yourself in the flag or being pro war. There was an entire peace movement consisting largely of Vietnam veterans but corporate mainstream media would have us thinking it was only Jane Fonda. I think it's especially relevant today when combat veterans are returning to civilian life. They should be expected to have a say in democracy and encouraged to organize.

Sworn deposition, folks. There it is. Imagine Major League Baseball filled with 10 percent NON white males and that's how I see the FDNY. Just think of the perfectly qualified candidates able to do the job but are barred because they don't have a hook, an insider, or political ally. It's cronyism, favoritism, and racism. I support and respect what the Vulcan Society is doing. The Vulcan Society organizes to make a difference and lobby non violently.

I expect Patricia Kavaler and everyone else testifying to receive ad hominem attacks from the establishment, to nullify their testimony, to destroy their credibility, this is how it can play out unfairly.

If you happen to think you are a victim of harassment-- I think documenting the time, date, description, and people involved is tantamount. Jot everything down, don't internalize and forget. Contact the following channels and get the paperwork submitted at the minimum of six months. Know your rights, don't be afraid, don't be antagonized and made to do the wrong thing. Don't lash out in anger. If you don't document, it is very hard to improve conditions. Also don't forget you're not alone-- there are others struggling and organizing to get fair treatment.

I was riding downhill in the dark alley, its uneven surface sending the bicycle along. The sweat was drying to a stickiness after the cooling downhill coast. The walkway busted out from underneath between the automobile lanes, and unto the streets. It was 1991. Tonight is 2011, twenty years ago that I last rode over the Williamsburg Bridge on a regular basis.

I went to school full time and worked part time in Manhattan. Tonight's ride across the bridge reminded me of the time when the pedestrian and bike lane was in disrepair. The south side was shut off and only the north side was accessible. The bridge was made of steel. It permitted the J, M, & Z subway to cross over the East River. Cars, delivery trucks, and motorcycles used its automobile lanes. In 1991, the walkway was falling apart.

The walkway surfacing, which was some sort of industrial asphalt pliable matting, had been peeling off the thick steel plates. The steel plates themselves were worn, shifting, leaving gaps in where one could inset an entire foot. The walkway was poorly lit. Graffiti and broken bottles were abundant along the walkway. Broken bottles were a fact of life. I imagined the heat of the days gave way to drinking big 40 oz bottles of malt liquor in the nights. Perhaps people got so drunk that they slammed those glass bottles onto the walkway.

“Mr. Tuffy”, Sean my roommate told me. “Mr. Tuffy tire liners will prevent those flats.”

I was fixing a flat on my 10 speed beater bike. The walkway had caused my second flat in a month, I guessed. The walkway glistened in all hours of the day. It glistened because of the broken glass. From tiny slivers that slipped themselves easily into your bicycle tires on rainy days to huge broken bottlenecks that looked like makeshift weapons. Shards of glass, poor lighting, slippery steel plates were a part of riding over the walkway.

So I went and got tire liners. The flats didn't end. It became less often. There was a gritty thrill to riding over the walkway. It was a necessity. It was quicker to get to work and school. If I didn't have big things carry to school, the bicycle, not the subway was the way to go.

Tonight, twenty years later, there's still a thrill to it. Instead of broken glass glistening like jewels in the dark, a sheltering construct of red steel supports, smooth tactile surface, and cleanliness. No bumpy uneven dirtiness tonight. No swerving around holes and broken glass. It reminds me of Constructivist sculpture. North and south sides of the bridge were open to pedestrians. So democratic I thought, the grit seemed to have disappeared with the traffic and East River steadily flowing below. Despite the ebb and flow of maintenance conditions, bicycle riding remains an enjoyable and healthy choice.

Deep thoughts on Towing

I have deep thoughts on this You Tube video. Kudos to the guy with the camera and witnesses. It would appear there are only 2 people involved in the towing. The tow truck needed rear wheel snow chains.

The front end loader should have chains too. A third person should have been a ground guide. There was no communication between the 2 operators. Handie talkies would have helped.

Lastly, maybe a front end loader can "inch worm" maneuver.As an afterthought it looked like the front end loader still had hydraulic power to move its bucket. If it could have pushed it down to inchworm out of the spot, then it might get towed.

It would been have easier to tow the SUV out of the way but the tow truck didn't have chains anyway. Our collective brains were on ice that day, but that's good no one got seriously hurt there.

After a day photographing the animals at the Bronx Zoo, we returned to Brooklyn and enjoyed watching the evening Halloween celebrants. On Washington and Dekalb Avenues, a band played on the driveway for surrounding blocks and trick or treaters. The group called itself The Stern Brothers Blues Band after their song.

Halloween fell on a Sunday night this year but there were still plenty of goings on around the neighborhood. At 227 Waverly Ave., the 1st Annual Brooklyn Halloween Science Fair for the Mentally Deranged took place. I have seen this house celebrate over the year and they put on a great show Halloween night.
