Deep thoughts on Towing

I have deep thoughts on this You Tube video. Kudos to the guy with the camera and witnesses. It would appear there are only 2 people involved in the towing. The tow truck needed rear wheel snow chains.

The front end loader should have chains too. A third person should have been a ground guide. There was no communication between the 2 operators. Handie talkies would have helped.

Lastly, maybe a front end loader can "inch worm" maneuver. As an afterthought it looked like the front end loader still had hydraulic power to move its bucket. If it could have pushed it down to inchworm out of the spot, then it might get towed.

It would been have easier to tow the SUV out of the way but the tow truck didn't have chains anyway. Our collective brains were on ice that day, but that's good no one got seriously hurt there.

Washington Ave. Halloween Blues

After a day photographing the animals at the Bronx Zoo, we returned to Brooklyn and enjoyed watching the evening Halloween celebrants. On Washington and Dekalb Avenues, a band played on the driveway for surrounding blocks and trick or treaters. The group called itself The Stern Brothers Blues Band after their song.

227 Waverly Ave. Brooklyn Halloween 2010

Halloween fell on a Sunday night this year but there were still plenty of goings on around the neighborhood. At 227 Waverly Ave., the 1st Annual Brooklyn Halloween Science Fair for the Mentally Deranged took place. I have seen this house celebrate over the year and they put on a great show Halloween night.

We saw Pavement on Sept. 19, 2010 in Brooklyn. It's not the complete set and all clips are less than 40 seconds long. When I got their CD's in the mid 90's, they didn't include bonus tracks. More on this show can be found at NYC Taper.

'Miss New Orleans?

This is a quick video of some of our visit to New Orleans in March of 2010. I might seem out of context but I would also like to share quotes to this post because I want to make a general impression of my attitude. Here are the quotes:

"With mirth & laughter let old wrinkles come & let my liver rather heat with wine than my heart cool with mortifying groans." - Shakespeare

"Any day I would prefer the company of fools sages psychotics geniuses than those who reek of self righteous morality."- Deepak Chopra

"If you cannot find a companion equal to or better than yourself, journey alone- do not travel with a fool" - Buddha

Antoine Dodson

Antoine Dodson is brave and honorable. I hope the intruder who attacked his sister gets caught. A good thing that might come out of this is an awareness much like the show "America's Most Wanted" brings to the public in its segments. Also the viral video may bring attention to the law enforcement community in that town to step up its patrolling.

What I say just from his original interview and his subsequent response the following day is this-- he appears to be comfortable, happy with himself, in touch with his emotions, and has great self esteem. He defended his sister, protected his family, and warned his community about a rapist on the loose. Those are all admirable acts.

Mermaid Parade 2010, originally uploaded by cisc1970.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/franciscodaum/sets/72157624188166223/

This event was primarily shot using aperture priority at f8, using ISO 100. Auto ISO would activate if the shutter speed was slower than 1/60 of a sec.

The on board strobe was in Commander mode which triggered a handheld strobe off to the right of the subject. Most of the vertical photos had the onboard strobe firing to the left while the hand held strobe was on the right.

Strobes use more battery power & you may lose shots if you wait too long for them to recycle. You may need to engage your subject & take more time setting up your shot.

While walking it might be better to shoot at 1/250 of a second to prevent movement blur. At F8, it's going to demand higher ISO & brighter strobes. It might be easier to just open a full stop to get the shutter to freeze action. The summer is full of parades to get better.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix on the EEEPC 900

In Sept. 2008, my 2003 laptop called it quits. I needed a portable for school so I picked up an ASUS Eee PC 900 16G for $349. It came with Xandros Linux. It could handle web video, internet, and Open Office. Pretty basic, small, and effective for my uses. The folks at Mozilla and Adobe updated their software so soon I needed to update my Firefox & Flash. Being a newbie, I could only use the built in update tool and not terminal.

Having heard good things about Ubuntu, I tried their distros for netbooks. At first I tried Easy Peasy 1.4. I couldn't get it to complete the installation. I didn't bother to check the MD5 sum. I abandoned it & tried the Ubuntu Netbook Remix. Being a newbie, I had a hell of a time figuring out making a bootable USB install drive using the downloaded iso image.

It was too complicated for me without an optical USB drive. I gave up trying to make a bootable USB flash drive using OS X terminal. A cheap OWC Value Line FireWire/USB2 SuperDrive was within budget so I got one. Now I could install distros using iso's burned to CD's or DVD's.

Kubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix mostly worked out of the box. Wireless LAN worked after researching the user forums and following instructions. The camera was recognized but it wasn't a priority. I needed Open Office, Firefox, and wireless LAN. All these worked flawlessly. After 8 months though, my noob skills did me in. The Firefox stopped working. I felt I had a good enough time using KDE. K Suite is alright.

I tried Amarok, Dolphin, and Konsole. These all worked pretty well. The Firefox stopped working though. It was just the getting stuck with Konqueror instead of Firefox that persuaded me to try Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook remix. Back in 1998, GNOME looked like the interface for Fisher Price toys. It just looked too unsophisticated compared to KDE. Anyway it's all about usability, and this is why I like Debian packages and Mac OS X.

Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix installed really easily. I have Open Office, Firefox, wireless LAN out of the box. The built in camera didn't work with Cheese! at first but my noob instincts told me there had to be some software dependencies somewhere with my 3 year old hardware. I installed an older web cam software using the software install manager (Debian makes it easy) and automagically the package somehow did something. Now Cheese! works.

I would like to try another browser. I can't get Facebook or Chatroulette webcam functionality. I also want to load it up with some music & see how Rhythmbox compares with Amarok. With this old hardware, I don't think it's practical to video edit but Ubuntu has a media editing distro that looks interesting. Linux continues to deliver useful, stable, and free software.

Anyhow enough politics.

I'm prefering Haiti news coverage that puts its history in context-- its 1804 independence, its reperations to France for a whole century, its help to Simon Bolivar, its rice farmers muscled out of the business by the World Bank, & its 1st democratically elected president exiled to South Africa.

Anyhow enough politics.
