NYC Commute

Watch the video
6.5 MB 1 min. Music: "Aybe Sea" by Frank Zappa. I made this in 2003. This was footage when I moved to St. George Staten Island in 1998 . It became my daily commute into Manhattan for the next year. Walking from my apartment to the ferry only took 15 minutes. On any given day I still love taking the Staten Island ferry.

The steel was being recycled within two weeks of the terrorism on Sept. 11. I don't know how many people's remains will ever be recovered but there's a group who believe a lot human ashes are in the garbage dump. National Public Radio had a radio program on a particular family victims' group trying to recover the victims' ashes from the garbage dump for a comingled memorial grave.

As a new Yorker, you know that Staten Island gets such a bad rap. I never really understood this. And people always talk about how inconvenient it is...

I feel grateful that I get to take an elevated train to work...I'd be estatic if I could take a boat!!!

Staten Island had the Fresh Kills Landfill. "It's where the dump is", people would say. I've been close to the dump driving to New Brunswick, NJ and yes the "dump" does smell. As far as affordable housing goes though, you'd have to go to Orange county though for anything. Forget Long Island, the 5 boroughs, and Westchester. It's either NJ or further north if you want to buy a house.
