Sand Mandala

Happy New Year To All

Some Buddhists, not all, practice sand painting. These meditative aids, called mandalas, symbolize a particular cosmology. This mandala was completed in one week. It is a practice in patience for the monk.

Buddhists believe in impermanence, much like Christians believe in heaven after death. This ceremony involves the creating of the mandala, destroying it, and throwing the sand in a river. The river is supposed to spread the act of blessing to the oceans and thus the world.

So in the New Year, I hope I only create helpful things, at least things harmless and not harmful.

Wow. That was a terrific video! I love the idea of beauty without permanence. It pushes you to appreciate things while they are right there...
